Devon and Becket are past clients turned real-life friends. I had the honor of photographing their engagement 3 years ago and wedding 2 years ago!
They recently moved to Denver around the same time that Stephen and I moved to Colorado. So we now live in the same state and can hang out more often!
Once things with Covid have become safer, we will finally get to spend time together mask free! I can’t wait!
This spring, an impending snowstorm was estimated to bring a few feet of fresh snow; wanting to do something creative and a little out of the box, I invited them over to hang out and take photos in the snow.
My goal was not to ask them to pose in any way the entire session. No direction, no prompts or poses. Just the two of them hanging out in the snow with a camera nearby.
I often tell my clients my goal is to find a balance between direction and space. I give couples direction so they feel comfortable and space to be their true selves. This helps couples get comfortable being in front of the camera and freedom to be themself and not faking it for the sake of photos.
Since I have taken photos of them before, I wanted to see what a session would be like free from any direction. We also hadn’t seen each other in a long while due to Covid, so I’m pretty sure we ended up talking and catching 50% of the time. 😂
It was fun to see what a session was like, free from any direction and prompts; it was a cool experiment and outside of my comfort zone.
I hope to incorporate more of that style of shooting into every session because it truly takes away the pressure to act or move in a particular way and allows couples to just be.
I had so much fun getting to play in the snow with these two and can’t wait to hang out in person soon!
