It was so amazing to be shooting again – Trent and Madison’s engagement session was my second session post the COVID shutdowns, and it feels like I’m finally getting back into the groove of things again. It’s so crazy how when you don’t shoot for a while, it both comes back so naturally and feels so foreign. I went from shooting every weekend and multiple times a week to nothing for months.
Trent and Madison braved the rain and chilly weather for their session in the mountains. The forecast leading up to their session wasn’t looking good. Even while I was scouting the location the hour before their session, the rain was coming down pretty hard. The skies all around us looked dark and stormy, but there was a glimmer of blue sky trying to peek through. Trent has lived in Colorado his whole life and knows that the storms in the mountains can look bad and pass on through, so he encouraged us to go for it anyways. And the storm blew right on through.
We felt so blessed to be able to explore Vail and the beautiful mountains in Colorado and spend some time together. COVID has really made me appreciate and value the connection I get to have with my couples.
Most of all it was such a blessing to see Trent and Madison’s relationship unfold before me. The way they balanced each other a joked with each other – their comfort and connection between them was beautiful to watch. They share a love for adventure and have such a wonderful approach to living life to the fullest. Stepping back and letting them be their true selves made for some beautiful candid moments during their photo session.
When it comes to engagement sessions, I always try to find a balance between prompting and directing and stepping back and witnesses. That balance allows me to capture couples in an honest and documentary photography style. It allows each couple’s story to be told authentically through the images captured.
I can’t wait to soak up our last few weeks in the Colorado Mountains photographing some amazing couples and enjoying the cooler weather while we can.
